Our core running speed depends pretty much on our natural ability, but where soccer players are concerned, Speed Can Be Learned because speed training for soccer is about technique as well as natural ability. In most cases, players will gain that all important half a yard by working on technical speed, movement with and without the ball and mental speed.
So to become a quicker soccer player involves a lot more than hurtling down a 100m track against a stopwatch. To turn quickly you have to master the mechanics of the turn, and then continually hone that turn until it becomes second nature. You will come out of the turn half a yard ahead of your competitor because you performed the skill in a more agile, both physically and mental, manner.
Creative speed, mental speed and technical speed all have to be improved in order for you to become a faster soccer player. Below are several hints and tips for becoming a faster soccer player; and remember the old saying, you get what you train for.
Always warm up before each soccer speed training session followed by stretches, short games to awaken the muscles as well as the mind. Never ever stretch a cold muscle.
Speed training should always be done at the beginning of the coaching session where the players are fresh and able to perform at maximum output. Never speed train players who are in a fatigued state as this will undoubtedly result in an injury.
Technique first and speed second. Focus on that all important technique with and without the ball.
Soccer requires that all players are as fast as they can be which means the “optimum speed” (the speed at which a player can move and still maintain control of the body in the playing environment) is found over time.. Experimentation and repetition of the individual with the coaching staff will deliver the result.
Acceleration requires fully extended primary joints- hip, knee and ankle. Extend them to give length to your stride and maximise the muscle output. To slow or decelerate you need to bend at the hip, knee and ankle to lower your centre of gravity at the same time as digging your toes slightly into the ground.
You Must have a Speed Ladder as this is one of the best speed training tools soccer players will ever use. Seriously, the speed ladder is designed for lower body agility, balance and coordination and speed from multiple angles.
Acceleration drills are a necessity if any degree of success is required. Acceleration is king. It is the first to the ball...that all important explosive physical and mental power that decides who is the quickest and most effective player.
Stride length is often discussed by coaches but sadly seldom acted on, and of course stride length control is the key to the whole shooting match. The more stride control you have - blisteringly quick subconscious leg muscle adjustments, can only be achieved by continuous practise. Muscle memory, ask any combat soldier. If it requires conscious thought, then you are too slow.
