Any lack of self confidence felt by a soccer player is normally down to what is called Performance Anxiety or the stress of competition, and the negativity resulting from this condition affects the player's mental approach to the game and physical performance. Self Confidence Training is dealt with on this site under the Peak Performance heading and can be accessed from the main menu or follow the Self Confidence Training link in this opening paragraph.
The more well known signs of players suffering from performance anxiety are as follows:
Breaking out in a cold sweat
A racing heart
Worrying about the result of the game
Becoming tense
Difficulty in concentrating
The key mental states now widely recognised to enhance mental readiness for competition are collectively known as the 4 Cs.
Concentration – The ability to remain focussed
Control - Maintain full emotional control under duress
Confidence - Self belief – believe in your own abilities
Commitment - Self discipline to work to agreed goals and deadlines
If you do lack self confidence on the field of play, then you are definitely not alone; and the good news is there are well proven techniques to overcome this condition.
