How to Defend Corners?

Is your team struggling to defend corners?

This is normally the result of an overcrowded goalmouth especially if your strikers drift back into the penalty area. Apart from the overcrowding issue, if the defenders do win the ball there is no escape route for the team as all the strike force is in the penalty area.

One option is to leave two players outside the area which will offer the chance of good counter attacks, and will normally bring three players out of the goalmouth to meet the challenge of the surge forward. It can be risky but well worth a trial period.

A player with low self confidence or for this purpose we will call a low emotional tank is irritable and less able to respond to coaching. These individuals also find it difficult to deal well with tough situations in a competitive or none competitive environment.

A player whose emotional tank is full to the brim is cheerful, more coachable, and better able to deal with tough situations. He/she will be brimming over with confidence and eagerness and literally aching for a good knowledge-based coaching session.

Experience has also shown that a “plus/minus ratio” of praise to criticism of 5:1 or greater is optimum for kid’s sports progression. When the ratio falls below 5:1, the youngsters become disheartened and their tanks become drained! When fans are roaring and cheering for a team, those players experience pride and their tanks begin filling up.

Coach in a positive and complimentary system that will top up the tanks of the players so they can play at their best consistently. And encourage players to actively help fill the emotional tanks of their team mates.
