Processed foods, sedentary lifestyles and nutritional unawareness are found at the top of the list of causes when it comes to the ever-expanding waist-lines of the majority of people living in the western world of developed countries. As well as being unsightly it is also a serious risk to health.
There are two types of fat in the abdominal area, and we start with subcutaneous fat which lies directly beneath the skin on top of the abdominal muscles. Visceral fat is the second type which is responsible for the “beer belly” appearance which you see in many men where their abdomen protrudes excessively. Strangely, the beer belly feels very hard when you push on it and often gives the impression of firm abdominal muscles.
Both types of fat in the abdominal area are a serious health risk with visceral fat proving to be more dangerous than subcutaneous. The health risks associated with excessive abdominal fat are heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer and other degenerative diseases. Part of the reason why visceral fat is particularly troublesome is its ability to consistently release more inflammatory molecules into the body.
