From the onset I want to emphasise that this run is a fitness test and is not part of a soccer fitness training program. And like all fitness tests, progress can be measured over a period of time. We do not recommend sending soccer players out on long boring runs because it is unnecessary and it has no part in a modern soccer training schedule.
We would, however, recommend players perform this test in position-specific groups for obvious reasons, but this reasoning also encourages healthy competition.
Routine
• Record the names of the participants in a logbook with
date, time, weather conditions, location, and of course time taken
to complete the run.
• Tell the players the distance and relate that to the number of times
they have to complete one circuit of the track, and that the object
is to complete the distance as quickly as possible.
• After each lap, call out to the individuals the distance remaining -
This will avoid confusion and help with speed pacing.
• And record each finish time in minutes and seconds.
• Do encourage the players to walk a lap as a warm down after the
competition has finished.
